Realization of high performance PZN-PT single crystal based piezoelectric flexural mode hydrophone for underwater sensor applications.

Abstract In this article, attempts are made to grow large size PZN-PT single crystals using high temperature solution growth method by implementing novel bottom cooling technique. The grown oriented and poled along 〈001〉 direction obtained larger piezoelectric strain coefficient (d 33 > 2000 pm V −1 ) suitable for development of underwater acoustic sensor requirements. Flexural mode hydrophone is realized the crystal discs. Finite element modeling employed examine design flexural an equivalent circuit model also applied study its characteristic at two extreme boundary conditions like simply supported clamped edge condition. response based evaluated over frequency range (100 Hz 12 kHz) responses compared with FEM results. predicted results from found be in good agreement experimental receiving sensitivity crystal-based dB higher than PZT 5A 2 kHz 6 kHz. fabricated offers better performance conventional piezo ceramic hydrophone.
